This is a man who believes in his work. Mohammad Sultan has made thousands of unique jewellery pieces over a period of 25 years. He hails from Delhi and has been in Goa past 21 years. His first exhibition was at the age of 17 in Kanpur. A question that baffled me was, how a man of such calibre still sells his jewelleries on the streets of Panjim,Goa. When asked how many pieces does he make in a day- his replied “sometimes 2 to 4 a day”. This is a great lesson we can learn from this 54 year old man, putting in small amount of work over a period of time makes a big difference.
A fascinating thing he mentioned was that, if any piece breaks while making an accessory, he would never join it again, this only challenges him to get things right the first time. With tears in his eyes he said “people come and buy stuff, but very few appreciate the hard work and dedication that has goes in making it.” He made me realised that starting a small business is not about where you start, whether you have a big store or you sell it on the footpath. What matters is the conviction of doing something truly amazing.
He displays his unique and intriguing jewellery on the footpath opposite Hotel Fidalgo, Panjim-Goa. It is worth visiting him. These silent artists are the very people who make India, truly Incredible.
